TIMARU FESTIVAL OF ROSES
POETRY AWARDS 2009
 
Total prize pool $500 and presentation of special roses.

Poets, from budding writers to those in full flower, are valued contributors to Festival activities.

 

This will be the third Festival Poetry competition and with a growing number of entries from all over New Zealand it is proving a popular addition to the programme.

 

This year’s Festival theme, “Four Corners of the Earth”, is also the inspirational subject for poetry entries

 

A prestigious judge will have the difficult task of sorting out award finalists. These top poets will be invited to read their entries to invited guests at the Festival Official Opening Ceremony on Friday, 20 November. Then the winner will be announced and presented with a $300 prize. Two $100 prizes for highly commended works will also be awarded.


Competition Rules

1          The winning entry will receive $300.00.
            Two consolation awards of $100.00 each will be made
 
Special roses will be presented to the prize winners.
 
The winning entries will be read at the opening function of the Timaru Festival of Roses at The Poplars, Pleasant Point Highway on Friday, 20th November 2009

2          The Judge will be Simon Snow, writer of Geraldine –  Simon is a recent winner of the Christchurch Press Summer Fiction Award and has contributed works to Tom Pepper’s Dog an anthology of poems by Geraldine poets
 
3          The theme for the 2009 Timaru Festival of Roses is “Four Corners of the Earth” but subject and construction are open
 
4          A limit of fifty lines is suggested.
 
5          Poems should not have been published previously.
 
6          Registration fee is $5.00 per entry.
 
8          Entries should be typed and two copies submitted to this address:

Name and address of poet should be typed on a separate sheet.
 
9          Entries should be received by 31st October 2009. 
 
10        Entries will be returned only if a stamped addressed envelope is included.
 
11                The Judge's decision will be final.  No correspondence will be entered into.
 
12                Short listed entries may be viewed in conjunction with the Festival of Roses CarolineBay Exhibitions on display Friday 28 - Sunday 29 November.
 
The Timaru Festival of Roses programme includes a poetry reading evening at Verde Cafedeli in Geraldine on Tuesday 24th November 2009 at 5.30pm.  All welcome.
