GETTING THERE
The markets are held on the grassy park of Caroline Bay and the entertainment areas within the park. This extensive park sits adjacent to the Caroline Bay beach and is on the northern side of the Timaru main shopping and business area.
There will be traffic signs indicating how to get to Caroline Bay. If you are travelling from the North or West of Timaru, drive through the Washdyke Industrial area on the Hilton Highway (State Highway 1) heading south. At the traffic lights at Te Weka Street (Couplands Bakeries corner), turn left into Te Weka Street, then immediately right into Virtue Avenue. Continue along Virtue Avenue under the railway overbridge into the Caroline Bay Area and locate a park. Marshals are on hand to assist you. Please note the Market Day is very popular therefore once the car parks at the north end of Caroline Bay are full, drivers wil be diverted to the southern end of the park. If you are travelling from the South of Timaru, drive into Timaru on State Highway 1 heading north. Turn right into Sefton Street East (at the Z Service Station). Go straight through the next set of lights - you are now on the Port Loop Road. Parking is available in the grassed area in the middle of the Port Loop or on the Caroline Bay grassed park. Follow the traffic signs and the directions of the parking marshals. Parking facilites are also available outside the Caroline Bay/Market Day area. These include street parks around Timaru's main shopping zones including Stafford Street, plus carparks on Sophia Street and The Terrace - all within easy walking distance. If you are walking or cycling to the market day there are several access points from State Highway 1 (at the intersection with Wai-iti Road), The Bay Hill (opposite the cafes and restaurants overlooking Caroline Bay) and via the Piazza steps and lift. |
